Sunset Dog Portraits

I was not planning any Sunset Dog Portraits. I was at a lighthouse taking photos of the sunset and doing some long exposure photos for fun after an engagement session for a couple for my other (people) photos business.
I had seen this young lady and her awesome dog walking around and sitting watching the sunset. I was tempted to say hi just to get to pet her pup haha. But these days you know a balding older man approaching a stranger can seem weird. So I was quietly walking past when this young lady stopped me and asked if I could take a photo of her and her dog with the sunset.

She reached out with an iPhone in hand and I am sure she wanted a phone photo. But I had a camera in hand. I also had a small moonlight with a grid on a light stand. So despite not planning any Sunset dog portraits, I offered to rather take some on my camera and I offered to air drop the photos from my camera to my phone then to her.

Well I started with a few photos of this awesome pup, then she got in one or two and I am sure we both thought we were done after about three or four photos. But there was a puddle nearby, and if you know how much I love reflections, you know I had to ask them to step over to the puddle.

Sunset Dog Portraits

What had started as a quick hey can you grab a photo turned into an impromptu 15 minute mini sunset session.
It rocked!

In the end I had taken about 50 photos and offered to just make a gallery of images for the session and give her the photos that way.
I am so very glad she chose to stop me. I also loved taking these photos and giving them to her.
There is a real joy in using my photos to just make some ones day and I know she was so excited when I got her a gallery.
Funny story though…… one of my all time favorite dog photos from a few years ago was at this same beach when I also finished a photo session and saw a dog playing in the water and I asked to photograph that pup right away.

Maybe I will start stopping more people with dogs haha. I tried recently on a walk with my own dog, but they were so nuts saying hi it was not gonna be a good time for photos.
