Disc Dog Championship 2026

Last weekend I had a free Saturday and decided to stop by the Ashley Whippet Invitational Disc Dog Championship event.
Despite several years of photographing dogs and other pets, I had not been to a disc dog event in person.
Goodness what fun!

I took a medium telephoto and a long telephoto lens so I would be able to cover the fields I expected to encounter.
I could not believe how freaking high these dogs jump to catch the discs. I also loved how wonderful the interactions between the people and their dogs were.

It was pretty clear each team had spent hours together and it was also very clear these dogs love chasing discs haha.
I thought I would snap a few photos for fun. I snapped a few thousand photos by the end of the day and I had a blast the whole time.

Disc Dog has been around a while!
Dog disc has been around since the 1970’s. I never realized it had been around so long. I guess when frisbees became a hit dog disk was born. I’m sure it did not take long for someone the figure out they could throw a frisbee for their dog. They are officially called discs as “frisbee” is a trade marked name.

The toss and fetch event was a lot of fun to photograph. But the freestyle was a whole other level of fun. It was also a lot harder to keep focus on the dogs. Goodness they are fast. That may be why I came home with so many photos. I was taking photos at 20 frames a second to keep up with the action and get the exact moments I wanted.

I came home with more than a few thousand disc dog photos. But I had so much fun and got so many great photos.
I think next year I am going to try and schedule more visits to events like this.
I also think I want to find a local dog disk duo to photograph at the beach at sunset.
If you happen to be a person with a dog that competes in this and want a session feel free to reach out.
I hope you enjoyed these photos as much as I enjoyed taking them.
